Training Ambulance Drivers in Siaya County: Building a Relentless Force of First Responders

At Prime Care Trainers (PCT), our mission has always been clear: empower frontline responders with practical, life‑saving skills that make a real difference when seconds matter. Recently, we had the honour of partnering with Matibabu Foundation in Ukwala; Siaya County to train ambulance drivers in Basic Trauma Care (BTC) — strengthening prehospital emergency response across the county.

This initiative represents a critical investment in community safety, resilience, and quality emergency medical care.

Ambulance drivers are often the first point of contact for critically injured or ill patients. Before a patient ever reaches a hospital, early recognition, correct assessment, and timely intervention can determine survival and long‑term outcomes.

By equipping ambulance drivers with structured trauma care skills, Siaya County is:

  • Improving early emergency decision‑making
  • Reducing preventable complications during transport
  • Enhancing patient safety and continuity of care
  • Strengthening the entire prehospital care chain

The Basic Trauma Care (BTC) course delivered by Prime Care Trainers is hands‑on, scenario‑based, and tailored for real‑world prehospital challenges. During this training, participants gained both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the following key areas:

🔹 Medical‑Legal Aspects of First Aid and Emergency Response

Understanding professional responsibility, patient consent, documentation, and legal protection while delivering emergency care.

🔹 Systematic Trauma Assessment:

A structured approach (X‑Ac‑B‑C‑D‑E) to rapidly identify and manage life‑threatening conditions.

🔹 Hemorrhage Control

Practical skills in bleeding control using:

  • Direct pressure
  • Tourniquets
  • Hemostatic techniques

🔹 Inline Spine Immobilization

Safe spinal protection techniques during patient movement and extrication.

🔹 Basic Airway Maneuvers

Ensuring airway patency using simple but effective techniques suitable for prehospital settings.

🔹 Assessing and Managing Shock

Early recognition of shock and immediate supportive interventions during transport.

🔹 Use of Medical Devices

Hands‑on training with essential trauma equipment, including:

  • Pelvic binders
  • Tourniquets
  • SAM splints
  • Other prehospital stabilization devices

🔹 Principles of Fracture Management

Immobilization techniques to reduce pain, prevent further injury, and improve patient outcomes.

🔹 Rapid Decision‑Making in the Field

Developing confidence to make critical decisions under pressure while prioritizing patient safety.

🔹 Safe Patient Evacuation and Handover

Effective techniques for patient movement, transport, and structured handover to receiving healthcare facilities.

This BTC training emphasized:

  • Realistic scenarios based on common emergencies encountered in the field
  • Hands‑on practice with equipment used daily by ambulance crews
  • Team communication and coordination during emergencies

The result? Confident, competent ambulance drivers who are better prepared to respond to trauma and medical emergencies across Siaya County.

Strengthening Emergency Care Systems in Kenya

At Prime Care Trainers, we believe that strong emergency care systems begin before the hospital doors. Training first responders, ambulance drivers, and frontline healthcare workers is essential to improving survival rates and patient outcomes.

We commend Siaya County for their commitment to building a skilled and resilient emergency response workforce.
