Empowering First Responders: Basic Trauma Care and Mass Casualty Training for Ambulance Drivers

In February 2025, a transformative initiative unfolded in Kikuyu, Kenya, as ambulance drivers from Nairobi County and surrounding regions came together for a specialized training on Basic Trauma Care and Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) Management. This vital training was made possible through a strategic collaboration between Life Care Hospital – Kikuyu and Prime Care Trainers (PCT) Ltd., both committed to strengthening pre-hospital emergency care in Kenya.

Bridging Gaps in Emergency Response

Ambulance drivers are often the first on the scene during emergencies, yet they are frequently overlooked when it comes to specialized training. Recognizing this gap, the training was designed to empower these frontline responders with critical skills to manage trauma patients and respond effectively during mass casualty incidents.

The program covered essential modules including:

  • Basic trauma assessment and stabilization
  • Airway and hemorrhage control
  • Triage protocols during MCIs
  • Safe patient handling and transport techniques
  • Scene safety and coordination with emergency teams

Delivered through interactive lectures, simulations, and hands-on practical sessions, the training not only boosted knowledge and confidence but also reinforced a team-based approach to emergency care.

A Collaborative Effort with Life-Saving Impact

The joint effort between Life Care Hospital – Kikuyu and Prime Care Trainers highlights the power of partnerships in transforming healthcare systems. By focusing on capacity building at the grassroots level, the initiative aims to enhance survival rates and outcomes in both urban and rural emergencies.

Looking Ahead: Building a Resilient Emergency Response Network

This training is just the beginning. With increasing road traffic incidents and the ever-present threat of mass casualty events, there is an urgent need to scale such programs nationally. Prime Care Trainers remains committed to providing evidence-based, practical, and accessible emergency training across East Africa.
